On National Route 3 in Ichikikushikino, Shimotabira Meat Shop (下田平精肉店) is a family-run neighborhood butcher with over 60 years of history. Its star is the croquette, fried only after you order: a filling of potato, onion and carrot with minced beef, pork and chicken. The family makes about 650 a day, and on busy days they sell out around 3 p.m. There are four kinds (plain, shiso-nira, pumpkin, and sweet potato, using purple sweet potato from autumn to spring), each 90 yen raw or 100 yen fried according to the official website.
Beyond croquettes, the shop sells pork and chicken katsu, kushikatsu, chicken sashimi made from whole local jidori processed in-house, yakitori, kombu rolls with pork belly, liver-and-chive stir-fry and kinpira gobo. It is open Monday to Saturday 9:00–19:00 and closed on Sundays.
